I collaborated with fellow artist Sarah Smizz on project Re:Advertise as part a residency entitled A Time and A Place at the Site Gallery, Sheffield in February 2012.
The Site Gallery is situated in the heart of Sheffield’s industrial quarter, just a stone’s throw from the station. We wanted to draw attention to the visuals that you are bombarded by everyday – in this case the text and messages you find in billboard advertising. Smizz and I sourced text from the billboards that were found within one mile of the gallery. Advertisers are constantly telling you want to want. We wanted to see if you could, using their words, express what you really want, or what is most important to you.
People really engaged with the challenge and tried to beat the restriction. At Site we took people’s responses and made an evolving ‘sun’ infographic and some typographic posters of our favourite responses. We later took the project to Yorkshire Artspace at Parson Cross, working alongside participatory artist Ania Bas.
